Paul Raoul Adrien JOLY (Alençon 1874-1935), physician and naturalist. 4 autograph letters signed to physician and naturalist Raphaël Blanchard (1857-1919). Ampasindava Bay, Ambararata, Hell-Ville and Majunga (Madagascar), May 20, 1899-June 1, 1900. 34 pages in-8. Beautiful, lengthy letters written during his scientific mission to the coasts of Madagascar, where his ambition is "to undertake the somewhat onerous task of studying everything that lives and has lived in this country. I divided up my work, having to stay three months in the region, and I spent the first of them recognizing as best I could the geology of the coasts where I was able to descend. I thus reviewed almost the whole of the large bay of Ampasindava and the bay of Bavatoubé, taking notes and samples in sufficient quantity to have an overall idea and precise details. However, I don't forget the other branches of natural history, and while the pebbles piled up in my room threaten to give the boat a run for its money, my tubes and jars are slowly but surely filling up [...]. The number and variety of crabs amazed me. The same goes for the lizards, some of which reach considerable dimensions. The spiders are very varied, sometimes with superb shapes and colors [...]." His exploration extends to Nossi-Bé, but he regrets not being able to penetrate inland. He talks about his work on parasites, and in particular the "flea ticks" that are wreaking havoc. He sends the Museum his notes and the samples he has been able to collect... He has just learned of Milne-Edwards' death, "he had welcomed me, on your recommendation, with such kindness that I was attached to him [...]".
