Isidore GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE (1805-1861), zoologist. - Lot 30
Isidore GEOFFROY SAINT-HILAIRE (1805-1861), zoologist. 2 autograph letters signed. 4 pp. in-4. Paris, 1855-1856. One on the letterhead of the Société Impériale Zoologique d'Acclimatation. On the importation and acclimatization of oxen in Algeria. "You did me the honor of telling me on Monday about a project to import oxen from Senegal to Algeria. The very next day, I received a letter from M. de Montigny concerning the advantages he felt would be gained by importing an Egyptian breed of cattle into Algeria [...]. With this in mind, I went to see Mr. Jomard, who knows Egypt so well. But only the most modern travelers could give us the information we need, as an epizootic destroyed most of the Egyptian cattle a few years ago, and Ethiopian breeds were brought in to replace them". He goes to Khalil-bey for information. The second letter concerns the introduction of Angora goats into Algeria. Attached is a L.A.S. from Albert Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1875, Jardin Zoologique d'Acclimatation letterhead).
