Benjamin GAILLON (1782-1839), botanist, specialist in marine - Lot 26
Benjamin GAILLON (1782-1839), botanist, specialist in marine plants. Autograph letter (draft) to Swiss botanist Augustin Pyrame de Candolle. 1 p. in-4. September 12, 1828. Having learned of his presence in Paris, he sends him a copy of his latest work, Résumé méthodique des classifications des Thalassiophytes [1828, by Levrault]. "I regret, Monsieur, not being able to present it to you myself, and not being able to make your acquaintance personally. I have long aspired to the satisfaction of being in contact with you. No one knows better how to appreciate your rare merit, and it is more penetrated by the scope and accuracy of your classic writings [that] I dare to ask you, if your errands take you to Abbeville, not to forget that I have been settled there for two months [...] and that an unpretentious and very cordial welcome awaits the legislator of French botany".
