Auguste DUMÉRIL (1812-1870), French entomologist, herpetolog - Lot 24
Auguste DUMÉRIL (1812-1870), French entomologist, herpetologist and ichthyologist. Set of 3 documents by and about Duméril: - L.A.S. addressed to his colleague [Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Bréau (1810-1892)]. Paris, March 21, 1864. 3 pp. ½ in-8. On the letterhead of "Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle - Zoologie - Reptiles et Poissons". "[...] I'm afraid I won't be able to attend the meeting of the Society's Council, which will take place the day after tomorrow, Wednesday. I regret this, because I would have liked to propose that no decision be taken by this Council on Mr. Edwards' request for two female llamas, since he is upset that his request should go through this channel, and to advise on how to obtain a direct donation from the Minister. The fact is, as I was assured by our agent, that the animals were given to Mr. Drouyn de Lhuys and not to the Emperor. And furthermore, it was from his own Ministry, and without passing through the offices of the Rue de Lille, that Mr. Drouyn de Lhuys replied to the letter read out at our last meeting, in which it is stated that the request made on behalf of the Muséum will be submitted to the Council of the Society [...]". Henri Milne-Edwards worked in particular on the fertility of llamas. - Constant DUMÉRIL. L.A.S. addressed to Émile Deschamps. [Jardin du Roi], July 24, 1831. 3 pp. in-4. Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle" letterhead. Letter concerning the benefits of Mont d'Or waters on the organs (spasms, rheumatism, lungs and spitting of blood), for Mme Deschamps. - Stanislas JULIEN (1799-1873), French sinologist. L.A.S. to Lemercier at the Bibliothèque du Jardin du Roi. [Paris], July 15, 1833. 1 p. in-4. Address on verso of second leaf. He offers to translate Chinese ichthyological documents to be used in Duméril's research for his masterwork Histoire Naturelle des Poissons (1865-1870): "Je prie vous remettre au porteur de la présente l'ouvrage chinois que Mr. Duméril demande pour moi en son nom. It is a collection of colored fishes, accompanied by a Chinese description, which I propose to translate in order to join them to the Histoire Naturelle des Poissons of the Japanese and Chinese Encyclopedias [...]".
