Edouard COLLOMB (Vevey 1801-1875), Swiss geologist and glacier specialist. Autograph letter signed to geologist Charles-Frédéric Martins (1806-1889). 3 pp. in-4. Wesserling, May 6, 1847. Embossed letterhead. Beautiful letter devoted to glaciers. He thanks him for his various shipments. "I put in the first line your ancient glacier of Mont Blanc, which seemed to me to have been touched by a master's hand. We have all read it here with the keenest interest [...]. 2° Your refutation of Durocher on the color of glacier water is a real service you have rendered to science. I was about to write to you on this subject when I received the issue of the Compte Rendus containing your article. How can such a distinguished geologist as Mr. D. observe so badly, this is how misconceptions are introduced into science [...]". He also received a set of documents from Constant Prévost that he found interesting. He is preparing a geological race in the Black Forest and will not be able to take part in the great 3-month race in Scandinavia organized by Dollfus and Schimper. "Jaun returned a few weeks ago from the glacier, and brought back some notes, but they no longer agree so exactly with the uniform movement; however, the alter Schwarz persists, claiming that there has been a mistake, that the poles have changed place [...]. My friend Silbermann in Strasbourg, an illustrious typographer, is going to have me engrave, illuminate and print in an indefinite number of copies, the representation of my old Wesserling glacier on a large scale [...]". He concludes by asking for news of the Americans, in particular Agassiz.
