CHEMISTRY - PHOSPHORESCENCE. Autograph manuscript by an unid - Lot 17
CHEMISTRY - PHOSPHORESCENCE. Autograph manuscript by an unidentified hand. 4 folio pages, numbered 542 to 545. Late 19th century. Diary of a chemist, kept over 3 weeks (April 15 - May 8) describing an experiment (illustrated with a sketch) of the action of titanium on phosphorescent zinc sulfide. "April 15- Action of titanium on the properties of phosphorescent zinc sulfide". "I had the idea of incorporating traces of a titanium compound into artificially prepared crystallized zinc sulfide, and to investigate whether the properties of this sulfide would be modified [...]. At the end of the experiment, I found crusts of zinc sulfide in the tube, whose appearance was much the same as that of sulfide prepared without titanium. Exposed to the sun, it gave off an extremely bright yellow phosphorescence in the dark. This difference in the intensity and color of the light emitted by the same substance, whose preparation is only modified by the addition of indosable traces of a foreign body, led me to investigate whether zinc sulfide prepared in this way had any special properties. I prepared a second sample following exactly the same procedure and, after allowing the tube to cool in the dark, I detached the crystalline crusts in the evening and enclosed them in a lead box [...]. May 7th. Some of the crystalline crusts are placed in the cage of a low-capacity electroscope, which remains charged for 48 hours. On May 8, after only 11 hours, the electroscope was completely discharged [...]".
