Jean CHAFFANJON (1854-1913), naturalist and explorer of the - Lot 14
Jean CHAFFANJON (1854-1913), naturalist and explorer of the Orinoco Basin and Central Asia. Autograph letter signed to zoologist Alphonse Milne-Edwards. 3 pp. in-4, headed "Mission scientifique de l'Extrême Orient". Vladivostok, September 9/21, 1898. Small postmark. Rare scientific letter from Vladivostok. He announces Bonhof's arrival and that the Vladivostok authorities have placed themselves at his disposal to facilitate all his studies, "especially marine ones". "The governor, the admiral commanding the port, as well as the section of the Siberian Geographical Society which has set up a museum in Vladivostok, have taken a keen interest in my projects, and I'm going to try to create here a sort of marine scientific station for zoological and botanical research. A laboratory will be set up right next to the Museum, on the seafront. Mr Bohnof takes advantage of the remaining fine days to harvest the season's plants. The fishing tackle is ready, and in October we'll start fishing, as at the moment I'm very busy setting up our commercial business". He has been testing fishing with Korean baskets, which have already given good results. I expect that with the devices similar to those used by the Prince of Monaco, the traps and nets I've had made, we'll have very good harvests. He offered to give the governor a duplicate of the collections for various Russian museums. "I will therefore send you all the types in several numbered copies. These numbers will correspond to the type collection that I will keep here: I would ask you to have our collections determined as soon as possible and to send me the list of species [...]. Most of the objects collected in the country and which are in the Museum are not determined and there are neither books nor people who can make it possible to do this work [...]".
