Some chipping. - Hugh Algernon WEDDELL (1819-1877), British botanist and explorer. Set of 6 L.A.S. to Emmanuel Le Maout. Poitiers, 1871 to 1874. 11 pp. in-8 and 15 pp. in-12. About a box containing gallinaceous plants destined for Brongniart, and a letter received that very morning from Pyrame de Candolle "who informs me of the sad death of poor Greenland". He mentions the botanists Ernest Cosson and Germain de Saint-Pierre, his research for his book on the Flora of the Andes, the Podosternaceae, sends lichens to the Museum, an article on Brazil, appointments at the Museum, etc. He also talks about his concerns regarding the future of the Museum. He also mentions concerns about the fate of Wladimir de Schoenfeld during the siege of Paris, and adds, "Nylander [Wilhelm Nylander (1822-1899), Finnish botanist and entomologist] wrote to me yesterday.
