Charles-Lucien BONAPARTE (1803-1857), ornithologist. - Lot 2
Charles-Lucien BONAPARTE (1803-1857), ornithologist. Letter signed "Charles Pce de Musignano", with autograph compliment, addressed to Eugène Le Bon, in Bologna, at the home of Princess Elisa Baciocchi (1806-1869), niece of Napoleon. Rome, May 11, 1837. 3 ½ pp. in-8. Address on verso of second leaf with wax seal and postmarks. Fully watermarked paper. The Prince of Musignano sends ranunculus and seeds to his correspondent, via the Italian botanist Antonio Bertoloni (1775-1869). "For the anemones, of which we only have a few stunted runts with great difficulty. It is therefore to the first of these flowers that I shall confine my consignment". About ranunculus: "I've already had the most beautiful flowers marked for you, so that I can send you their claws, and thus build up a small collection of the safest and most varied flowers. In addition, I will send you a few small packets of seeds. He will address everything to Professor Bertoloni, adding that "gardeners are worse than horse dealers in this respect, and I warn you in advance that the smallest and ugliest claws often produce the most double and best-painted flowers [...]". He goes on to talk about his Iconografia della Fauna Italica, a work in progress (between 1832 and 1841), sending seven copies to his cousin Juliette, and lamenting the fact that in France there are "only five subscribers" for the work.
