ANTHROPOLOGY. Louis-François JAUFFRET (1770-1840), co-founde - Lot 1
ANTHROPOLOGY. Louis-François JAUFFRET (1770-1840), co-founder and perpetual secretary of the Société des Observateurs de l'Homme. Autograph letter signed to Jacques Le Brigant (1720-1804). 2 pp. in-8, Société des Observateurs de l'Homme letterhead. [Paris, undated, circa 1800]. Address on spine with red wax seal of the society with Greek motto (broken at opening). Very rare letter from the Société des Observateurs de l'Homme, the first anthropological society, founded in 1799 and which had only a short-lived existence (it was dissolved in 1804 and its archives have been destroyed). "The Société des Observateurs de l'Homme has received your letter and has been touched by the confidence you have shown in it. All its members are aware of the importance of your work, and are well aware that you combine the most respectable virtues with the most eminent knowledge. The Society would like to have the means to hasten the publication of the new research you have announced. They can only be useful and valuable. Your reputation is your guarantee. However, for a modest membership fee to cover its expenses, the Society can only offer to publish annually in its memoirs the fragments of your work that you would like to send us. If this offer would suit you, I would ask your permission to propose you as a corresponding member [...]".
