Georg Friedrich HAENDEL. L'Allegro, il Penseroso... - Lot 330 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Georg Friedrich HAENDEL. L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato the Words taken from Milton set to Musik by Mr Handel to which is added his additional songs. London, printed for Wm Randall (successor to the late Mr J. Walsh). In-folio, beautiful frontispiece with a portrait of Handel, title page, index, 115 pp. of engraved music + 19 pp. of engraved music in appendix. Contemporary boards (spine missing, first cover detached). Wetness and wormholes. Two handwritten bookplates: "R. Garbett" and "Exeter Choral Society Philsalter 1817" (crossed out) with label on first board. This work - unique in Handel's output - is neither an oratorio nor an opera, but rather a large pastoral ode very close in form to Dryden's Alexander's Feast or the shorter Ode for St. Cecilia. The work is based on two complementary allegorical poems by John Milton, L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, finely rearranged by Handel's trusted librettist, Charles Jennens, with the help of Handel's philosopher and friend, James Harris, who suggested interweaving the poems to create an imaginary debate between the two allegorical characters.
