Georges LEYGUES (Villeneuve-sur-Lot 1857-1933),... - Lot 254 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Georges LEYGUES (Villeneuve-sur-Lot 1857-1933), politician and many times minister under the third republic. 9 autographed letters signed to his wife Anne [Marie-Anne Desclaux (1857-1951)], 31 pp. of various sizes (in-8, in-12 and in-4). 1918-1924 and without date. Headers of the Chamber of Deputies (4), of the Minister of the Navy and of the Grand Hôtel de Capvern-les-Bains (3). Leygues informs his wife of the events of the conflict of the First World War, in a very interesting 6-page letter, dated June 12, 1918. "Our troops counter-attacked yesterday on a 12 km front [...]. It is a success of great importance. It allowed us to chase Von Hutier's soldiers from the plain they had managed to win [...]. The Germans were hesitant and hesitant. They have called in divisions of the Kronprinz army of Bavaria to fill the huge gaps in their ranks that our machine guns and cannons have created [...]. While we are stopping their march, the Americans are arriving in droves. There are nearly 800,000 of them in France. In two months there will be 1,200,000. The fate of the war will be decided [...]". He also alluded to the sanctions taken by Clemenceau following the battle of Chemin des Dames. "Clemenceau took sanctions. I pushed with all my power against the generals who lacked foresight or energy in the Chemin des Dames affair. General Anthoine, the major general of the G.Q.G., was relieved of his duties. General Duchêne was demoted. Generals de Maud'Huy, Corvisart and Chrétien were dismissed. I would have gone further for Duchêne [...]". The rest of the correspondence is more intimate. He evokes his family, his health, the search for an apartment, a ring that he recently gave her: "it is a rare and precious jewel that I wanted for you [...]. You know very well that the novel of our life resembles a tale of a thousand and one nights [...]".
