BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE. Piece signed by Laurent... - Lot 107 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
BOUCHES-DU-RHÔNE. Piece signed by Laurent de VILLEDEUIL and de LAMOIGNON. 4 pp. in-folio. Versailles, June 22, 1787. Some fading. Important document on the suspension of the privilege of city of Marseilles, following the swindle led by Marseilles merchants. "On the account given to the King in his council of an abuse very common in Marseilles and which is very prejudicial to the revenues of His Majesty, in that the merchants of this city take advantage of a privilege which they enjoy in their capacity as citizens, to ship for foreign account drugstuffs and groceries, to which the regulations grant considerable exemptions from duties when they are shipped for the account of the citizen merchant of Marseilles, either by leaving this city and its free port, to enter the Kingdom, or by sea for the colonies; that this abuse is all the more prejudicial as it weighs on the indigent part of the consuming people, and procures to the speculators motives of monopolization whose effect is harmful to the trade [...] ". A long report follows which reveals the extent of the damage, which amounts to more than 1.8 million pounds. Finally the sanction fell: "The King being in his council ordered and orders the provisional suspension of the privilege of city of Marseille [...]". Bouches-du-Rhône : see also n°292
