[MUSEUM]. Achille-Narcisse de SALVANDY (1785-1856),... - Lot 44 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
[MUSEUM]. Achille-Narcisse de SALVANDY (1785-1856), Minister of Public Instruction. Letter signed to Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. 2 pp. in-4. Paris, December 29, 1837. Creation of new chairs at the Museum. He answers his fears: "You have misunderstood, sir, the intentions of the Minister of Public Instruction, and those of the Museum of Natural History. In the projects that I have discussed with the assembly of professors, I have had in mind creations that relate to parts of science that have not yet been brought together in a body of doctrines, and which are not the subject of a particular teaching. I have made sure that the programs of the projected chairs do not in any way affect the teaching with which the Museum of Natural History is already endowed, and that the allocations of these new chairs would not cost anything to the allocations of the pre-existing chairs. I cannot therefore understand, Sir, the illegal lapse of which you complain to me. By taking care to complete the teaching of the Museum of Natural History, the Minister of Public Instruction fulfills a duty which indicates to him, at the same time, and the general movement of the spirits towards the ideas which do not have yet, in France, official interpreters, and the need to recognize the honorable, patient and difficult work of the scientists on which he threw the eyes ". And Salvandy adds with his own hand "in concert with your colleagues and with you. He will always be the first to honor your long and useful works".
