Paul LANGEVIN. L'Ère des transmutations by... - Lot 39 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Paul LANGEVIN. L'Ère des transmutations by Paul Langevin. Proofs with autograph corrections. Sept. 29, 1945. 2 large sheets of proofs for 14 pp. in-8. Corrected proofs of this important scientific text on the atomic bomb, published shortly after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in La Pensée, revue du rationalisme moderne (July-Sept. 1945 issue), referring to the work of Pierre and Marie Curie, Henri Becquerel, and Irène and Frédéric Joliot-Curie. "One cannot exaggerate the importance of the event that the appearance of the atomic bomb represents for the future of humanity [...]". Paul Langevin makes corrections in the margins and additions of a scientific nature, in interlining. For example, concerning the role of the neutron, he specifies: "A remarkable fact is that this fixation of a neutron on a nucleus is particularly easy when the speed of the neutron is close to a particular value, called the resonance value, which is well determined for each nucleus. Concerning the isotopes present in nature, he adds: "Most of the chemical elements present in nature have been shown to be mixtures of several isotopes, the number of which can be as high as ten for certain elements such as tin or mercury. Uranium is also a mixture of isotopes. Three typescripts by Paul Langevin are attached: "Speech by Mr. Paul Langevin" [at the inaugural session of the Encyclopedia, June 10, 1945, 11 pp. in-4]. "Speech by M. Langevin [at the congress of the Union Nationale des Intellectuels, June 1946, 10 pp. in-4]. And a mimeographed text : " Culture et humanités - Exposé de M. Langevin " (5 pp. in-folio).
