Antoine GOÜAN (1733-1821), French botanist... - Lot 30 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Antoine GOÜAN (1733-1821), French botanist and ichthyologist, fervent apostle of Linné. L.A.S. Montpellier, "15 Nivôse" [January 4 or 5, late 18th century] n.d. 2 ½ pp. large in-4. About a box of interesting mineralogy and petrifications, containing among other things a rare "pearly chambered nautilus from the Indies, found however on the side of Avignon," lava dating from "a hundred centuries before," during the granda cremada (the great burn), "which burned the whole country of Agde," etc. He intercedes for the widow of the marquis Henri-Marie-Amable de Cambis, who died in 1795 (year III) and for "a man named Lajacopierre [...] who was very well educated in natural history, plants, fish&". It is about the botanist Pierre-Henri-Hippolyte Bodard de La Jacopière (1758-1826), French botanist, student of Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu. Goüan, having lent him precious books on fishes, tried to recover them at all costs after La Jacopière's disappearance. He wanted to offer to his correspondent the second edition of his work of ichthyology entitled Historia Piscicum (1770), tried to recover the Voyage de La Chapelle et de Bachaumont, lent to Jean de Bry (1760-1831), etc.
