Header of the Norman Association for the progress of agriculture, industry and arts. Castle of (Vaucelles?), August 28, 1854. He is back from the Scientific Congress held in Dijon and reports on it; he complains about the way he is treated by other scientists, especially the members of the Institute. "But it is enough to distress you with these sad details, I am anxious to assure you that all this will not prevent me from continuing the work as much as I can [...]". "I am going to finish the volume of sciences begun several years ago and in which we have a memoir by you: it will be a little smaller than I had planned, but it must be finished [...]. You know the result of the election to the Institute (botany section), you were, in any case, on the list of candidates, and it is a first success because there were a great number of competitors of merit [...]. I see all this with sorrow because for a long time I had kept a little illusion on the dignity of the learned bodies: but when one examines things closely, all illusion ceases and the first feeling one has is the desire to isolate oneself [...] ".
