[BOTANIST OF THE KING IN THE INDIES - LOT-ET-GARONNE].... - Lot 8 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
[BOTANIST OF THE KING IN THE INDIES - LOT-ET-GARONNE]. Set of 2 documents containing the complaint of Mesdemoiselles de COUZIER, from Agen, addressed to the Maréchal duc d'ESTRÉES, on the occasion of the death of their brother, doctor-botanist of the King in the French Indies. Beauville, 10 January 1738. 3 ½ pp. in-folio and 2 pp. in-4. L.S. by the sisters Jeanne, Marie and Ieanne de Couzier and attached handwritten copy of their complaint. They ask for help " [...] against the injustice of Sieur Delabarre Lieutenant of the Connétablie and Maréchaussée of France who has been withholding from us for more than three years the sum of " almost 2000 livres. The plaintiffs explain that they "had sold all their possessions to support their brother in Montpellier and Paris, he was sent to the Indies by his Majesty as his Doctor, for a pension of 2000 livres [...The exhibitors had the misfortune to be addressed to Mr. Delabarre who was given the power of attorney to withdraw the estate from the Compagnie des Indes and the arrears of one year and ten months of pension [...]...] ". There follows a long and precise account of the situation. Couzier, a botanist physician, had been charged with a mission to Bourbon Island, for one year, then to the East Indies, during which he maintained a correspondence with Jussieu (see the latter's archives), devoted to medicinal and coloring plants. He died in India in 1730. Collection stamp in blue ink formed by a cross and the letters SA. Antique pouch of Saint-Hélion.
