Charles-Lucien BONAPARTE (1803-1857), French... - Lot 6 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Charles-Lucien BONAPARTE (1803-1857), French ornithologist, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. L.A.S. "Charles Pce de Musignano", addressed to Isidore GEOFFROY-SAINT-HILAIRE, Freybourg en Brisgau [Freiburg im Breisgau, in the Black Forest], September 21, 1838. 1 p. large in-4. Exceptional letter in which Bonaparte introduces the American John Bachman to Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. He quotes Jean-Jacques Audubon, Owen, Agassiz, Buckland. [John Bachman (1790-1874), Lutheran minister and American naturalist, wrote with John James Audubon (1785-1851) The viviparous quadrupeds of North America, or Unity of the Human Race, an important stone in the edifice of the theory of evolution.] "I cannot help but introduce you to Mr. Bachman of Charlestown, the man in the world who knows best the species of birds, and especially the small quadrupeds of America! He will tell you about his 17! species of American hares, his shrews which he will show you [?] He will be able to rectify, if necessary, like me and even better than me, the nomenclature errors of your museum. I am sure that you will thank me for this introduction: please make him known to those of your colleagues who could be useful or agreeable to him. He is the president of the scientific faculty of his American city, the friend of Wilson, the father-in-law of Audubon's son! He is more than that 'a conscientious naturalist' and a plain Republican [...]. Ps: Do not write me any more than in Rome or in Florence and let it be known to [...]". Bonaparte finds himself surrounded by many celebrities of the German Natural History as well as with "[...] Owen, Agassiz, Buckland && are my constant companions!... I am not less impatient to receive the letter I asked you for! [...] ".
