LALLEMAND Jean - Baptiste Dijon 1716 - Paris 1803 1 - View of the surroundings of Frascati A philosopher converses with his disciples amidst ancient ruins at the foot of a sarcophagus with lion heads and claws. Oil on canvas (some lacunae on the lower portour in particular) On the reverse of the stretcher, an old inventory number in black ink 106. H. 64 - L. 49 cm Related to the original model of the reverse engraving by David Née entitled Vue des environs de Frascati, marked J. B Lallemand pinx, and taken from the Cabinet de Monsieur l'Abbé Copelle (Musée des Beaux - Arts d'Orléans. Base Joconde. Engraving N° 2008.0.1706). The same sarcophagus with lions' feet, resting on an identical stele adorned with two figures, can be found in another composition by J. B Lallemand in the Musée des Beaux - Arts de Bordeaux (47 x 37 cm) Figures contemplating a tomb (former collection of the Marquis de La Caze). 2 - Young girls at a fountain A soldier at rest points to a marble sculpture of a Roman empress in front of a fountain under a parasol pine. Original oil on canvas (a few gaps in the surround and minor restorations in the upper right corner, in particular). H. 64 - L. 49 cm Two other compositions of similar dimensions (61 x 48.5 cm), combining Roman ruins with figures meditating on their decay, belong to the Musée de Caen (Cf.
