FRENCH SCHOOL First Third of the 18th century Composition for the Confrérie des Pénitents de Notre-Dame de Lorette. The Birth of the Virgin, surmounted by the inscription SOCIETAS ALMAE DOMUS LAURETANAE in red capital letters. On either side are the names of the Rector, Vice - Rector, Councillors, Master of Ceremonies, Sacristans and Nurses, and Grand Master of the Choir, as well as the Treasurer and Secretary. A date refers to the taking of "possession of the offices" on the day and feast of Pentecost, June 7, 1707. Oil on canvas (some restoration). H. 81.3 - L. 58.5 cm A confraternity of the Pénitents de Notre - Dame de Laurette was active in Lyon in the 18th century, alongside those of the Pénitents du Gonfalon, the Pénitents de la Miséricorde and the Pénitents de la Passion (Cf. Almanach Astronomique et Historique de la Ville de Lyon et des Provinces de Lyonnois, Forez et Beaujolois (Imprimerie d'Aymé Delaroche, Imprimeur Libraire de Monseigneur le Duc de Villeroy, du Gouvernement & de l'Hôtel de Ville - 1754).
