[VOLTAIRE]. Philippe Louis JOLY (Dijon 1702-1762), philologi - Lot 738
[VOLTAIRE]. Philippe Louis JOLY (Dijon 1702-1762), philologist, canon of the chapel-au-Riche in Dijon. Autograph letter signed with poem [to VOLTAIRE]. 2 pp. ½ in-4 (incomplete from the beginning). Dijon, May 9, 1746. Superb letter of admiration to Voltaire, with poem, on the occasion of his election to the French Academy. "I finish this too long letter, by asking you, sir, to accept the following piece. It is a tribute that I thought I owed to the superior merit of two men for whom my admiration is boundless. This poem of 10 verses is entitled: "On the Reception of M. de VOLTAIRE to the French Academy, in the place of Mr. President BOUHIER, on May 9, 1746". He adds in a postscript: "I took the liberty, in a place of my work, of not agreeing with your feeling on the praise you give to Du Plessis-Mornay in a note of your immortal Poem of the League [La Ligue ou Henry le Grand]. I have weighed with extreme care the merits of this famous Protestant, in order to be able to pronounce on the judgment by which a modern Author attributes to him a Book which has made a lot of noise; and I have convinced myself that Mornay was absolutely incapable of having composed it. Although I have said nothing that could in the least hurt the veneration I have for you, Sir, I will happily submit my little criticism to your decision [...]. I know that you are always busy with important matters, especially now. That is why I beg you, Sir, if you deign to pay any attention to my letter, to consider it as not received, until you are fully relieved of the cares that your new Dignity imposes on you.
