TURKEY / SYRIA. Safar al-Attar al-Mardini known as Athanasius SAFAR (Mardin, Ottoman Empire 1638-1728), Syrian Catholic bishop of Mardin (Turkish-Syrian border); he went on mission to Persia and Paris, then, fleeing the persecution of Christians, settled in Rome; He obtained from Innocent XI to travel to America where he collected a considerable fortune which was seized by the pope's authorities for the maintenance of the Syrian chapel in Rome, granting him only a pension. Handwritten piece on vellum, calligraphed and decorated in ink, and signed by Safar. 47.5 x 32 cm. In Latin. Rome, July 12, 1717. Very nice ecclesiastical diploma for a priest of the archbishopric of Mechelen. On the back signed mention of the archbishop of Malines, Thomas-Philippe de Hénin-Liétard. Beautiful and rare piece, titles nicely calligraphed on 4 lines, in a frame drawn in ink (coat of arms, allegorical attributes).
