Karl MARX (1818-1883). 3 large photographic... - Lot 711 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Karl MARX (1818-1883). 3 large photographic portraits of Karl Marx by John Jabez Edwin Mayall. Counter-types made around 1900-1910, of a spectacular format, after Mayall's famous photo; in different techniques and framing, perhaps essays. - Silver print mounted on cardboard. 36 x 28 cm. Cut edges. Small scratches and rubs, not serious. The framing corresponds to the one of the original photo of Mayall. - Print (?), mounted on heavy cardboard. 40 x 30,5 cm. Scratches and rubs. The framing here is tighter. - Silver print, 38 x 30 cm. Two folds in the corner. The print is a little yellowed, in a slightly wider frame. Seems to be a poorly printed essay. Provenance: Paul Longuet (1909-1979), great-grandson of Karl Marx (he is the son of Edgar and the grandson of Charles Longuet and Jenny Marx) and senator of Madagascar from 1952 to 1958: a photocopy of envelopes with the effigy of Karl Marx, sent from Moscow to Paul Longuet, is attached. Also enclosed is a copy of the Mémoires de Guerre de Charles de GAULLE (volume 1 only), with this dispatch: "to Paul Longuet, most cordially and in memory of the great trial. 22.8.58. C. de Gaulle".
