Constantin-François Chassebeuf, count VOLNEY (1757-1820), philosopher and academician. 2 autograph letters (written in the 3rd person), one to Mr. Olive (Philadelphia, January 14, 1797), the other to Mr. Fenwick consul of the United States in Bordeaux (s.l. 20 messidor). 1 p. in-8 and 1 p. in-4. On his departure from the United States (he had been received by George Washington, but was expelled by John Adams, as soon as he was elected, after he had criticized the book of the Defense of the Constitution of the United States). In a first letter written from Philadelphia he sent a package of letters to be sent to France "with as much security as possible". In a second letter to the consul of the United States, he informs him that he will be unable to see him because of "the arrival of his luggage and the necessity to remove it today from the customs".
