FRANÇOIS 1ER (1494-1547), king of France. Letter... - Lot 549 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
FRANÇOIS 1ER (1494-1547), king of France. Letter signed "à noz bien aimez et feaulx les vichancellier et gens tenant nos conseil en notre sénat de Millan", countersigned by his secretary Robert Gedoyn. 1 p. folio. Saint-Germain-en-Laye, July 22 [probably 1519]. Address on the back. Rare letter signed by the young king of France as duke of Milan, about the murder of Gasparo Stanga, killed by his brother Gian Clemente Stanga. "We have seen certain procedures which were made by the vicar of our cappetaine of justice in Milan or made of messire Jehan Clement Stangue charged and imputed of the death of messire Gaspard Stangue his brother and we have heard that almost all the acts of this matter were made more to the justification of the said Stangue than to find the truth of the said case, for which adjournment we do not see that in any way has been made any diligence by the said vicar which gives us occasion to be rather unhappy and to think that there is some intelligence. We have also seen the ordinances that you have made in the aforementioned matter and affair in our Senate which seem to us to be justified, given the procedures which have been produced to you and of which you have sent the double... ". He asks that the delay to find proofs and clues be prolonged, "so that for lack of this the said homicide does not remain impugned [] such diligence from beyond that one can know the truth of the case if enormous made in plain day []". [Gian Clemente Stanga, a native of Cremona and a member of the Guelph branch of the Stanga family, was sentenced to death for the murder of his brother in 1519, but was later pardoned; he was then released and entered the service of Francis I, and was again imprisoned by Francesco II Sforza until at least 1526.]
