Gabriel BROTIER (Tannay, Nièvre 1723-1789), scholar and phil - Lot 527
Gabriel BROTIER (Tannay, Nièvre 1723-1789), scholar and philologist, Jesuit and theologian, he made esteemed editions of Tacitus and Pliny the Elder; member of the Académie des inscriptions. Autograph manuscript (dense and very corrected draft) " Éloge historique de M. Guérin ", 4 pp. in-folio. In praise of the bookseller and printer Hippolyte-Louis Guérin (1698-1765), received as bookseller in 1718 and printer in 1752, succeeding his father Louis Guérin. "Commerce and the arts, fertile sources of the wealth and splendor of States, owe their brilliance to these rare men who ennoble their profession by the wisdom of their views and the superiority of their talents. To consecrate their memory by the account of their actions is to pay tribute to merit, to honor one's century, and to preserve models for posterity. May it see the reproduction, from a family originating from Brie, of the famous man whose life I will write [] ". In the margin, a mention from the XIXth century indicates: "The eulogy of Mr. Guérin by Fr. Brotier has been printed; but it is a real bibliophilic rarity".
