Achille BAZAINE (1811-1888), marshal, he capitulated at Metz - Lot 522
Achille BAZAINE (1811-1888), marshal, he capitulated at Metz on October 28, 1870. Autograph manuscript, "Note communicated to Prince Frederick Charles (12 August 1970). 3 pp. in-8. October 12, 1870. Header of the commander in chief of the 3rd corps. Important historical document: Bazaine's attempt to negotiate with Prince Frederick-Charles before the capitulation (October 28), acknowledging the victory of the German armies and proposing an agreement to repress internal disorder and keep the army united. "The military question is judged; the German armies are victorious and His Majesty the King of Prussia would not know how to attach a great price to the sterile triumph which he would obtain by dissolving the only force which can today control the anarchy in our unhappy country, and to ensure to France and to Europe a calm become so necessary after the violent commotions which have just agitated them [] ". Attached is a bill A.S.: "the interview is postponed to 6h ½ hour for dinner, which I will attend. I will therefore not see you until tomorrow morning".
