ANTOINE DE LORRAINE (Bar-le-Duc 1489-1544), duke of Lorraine - Lot 515
ANTOINE DE LORRAINE (Bar-le-Duc 1489-1544), duke of Lorraine, called Le Bon, son of René II. Letter signed with an autograph line, to the seneschal of Agenais (Pothon de Raffin). 1 p. in-4. Nancy, the penultimate of September (circa 1530-1540), address on the back. Very nice watermark with fleurdelysed coat of arms. "Monsieur le seneschal j'ay receu vos lettres par votre homme présent porteur et pour m'acquitter de promesse, par luy vous envoye deux lasniers [oiseaux de la famille des falcons] pour bailler de passe-temps à l'Antiquité. You will teach them the trade according to their age and you will want them to be like the ones you asked for, because in this and other things you will want to please. I pray God, Monsr le Seneschal, to give you what you desire. Mention at the top of the letter "useless for the land of Azay" [the seneschal of Agenais, Antoine (known as Pothon) de Raffin, captain of the king's bodyguards, received the castle of Azay le Rideau from the hands of François I in 1535]. The laniers are falcons. Here they are trained for hunting. In the Cinquième Jour de la Sepmaine, the Gascon poet Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas mentions it : " Suyvent l'unique oiseau par les célestes voyes / Avec le Tiercelet, le Lanier, le Vautour " (v. 664-665)
