Paul ALEXIS (1847-1901), naturalist writer, one of the six a - Lot 514
Paul ALEXIS (1847-1901), naturalist writer, one of the six authors behind the Soirées de Médan. Autograph manuscript signed, with erasures and corrections, "Les Soirées de Médan". 14 pp. in-8, cut out for printing then reassembled (some tears affecting the text). Exceptional manuscript revealing the genesis of Les Soirées de Médan: "Here is exactly the genesis of Les Soirées de Médan. In 1879, if we had not yet really begun - that is to say, in "the book", and even then, Huysmans had already published in Belgium Le Drageoir aux épices, I a little act performed at the Gymnase, Hennique verses and one or two attempts at a romantic novel, We were five young men of letters in expectation, if you will, but all of us had written in various newspapers, all of us had already been seeing Flaubert, Zola, Goncourt, and even Daudet, and, moreover, for at least two years, we had been meeting every Wednesday, I believe, for a weekly dinner, at a simple "troquet" in Montmartre, rue Coustou. To tell the truth, the Soirées came out of there, from our "Assommoir dinners", but here is how. The mazagran swallowed "in a glass" and the bill settled - oh! a picnic in the two francs fifty! - we went to finish the evening at one of us, most often at Maupassant's, nearby, rue Clauzel [] ". This article appeared in Le Journal of November 30, 1893.
