Henri MARTELLI (1895-1980), composer. - Lot 504
Henri MARTELLI (1895-1980), composer. - More than 300 letters exchanged between Henri Martelli and his wife, mainly during the years 20-40. Passionate correspondence, very dense especially in the early 20s, in which it is often about music, with sometimes small compositions inspired by his "beloved Lulu" as this "transcription for piano of this phrase which is in my 3rd string quartet and that inspired me this pain that broke me and hurt me so much, one day that I saw my dead Lulu, my adorable fiancée inanimate forever. Short excerpt on his failure at the Prix de Rome (April 1921). "I have enormous hope in my success for Rome []. Today I spent 15 hours at the Conservatory writing, I only slept 5 hours last night to make another copy for the performers []. I am going to see Mr. Richepin of the French Academy for whom I have a letter of introduction. I will ask him to speak about me to different members of the Institute []. Busser, whom I saw this morning, assures me of his full support. I am confident that I will be among the six []. The day before yesterday, they committed the denial of justice by refusing me to take part in the composition contest, although what I had written was one of the best compositions. Busser who read it this morning was stunned by this result due to a trick by the class coach against those who do not want to take lessons with him. It is simply despicable and shameful []. Widor is amazed at my failure on Wednesday. He told me that my composition was one of the best, but that it was not listened to by chance. He does not understand at all why I was left out []. Tonight I saw Théodore Dubois, member of the Institute, who told me repeatedly that he would have liked me to be "among the six". This is a very clear indication of his vote in my favor. This is what Widor told me the other day [] ". - An important set of documents (letters, press clippings, concert programs, notes in his hand, etc.) carefully preserved and classified by Henri Martelli in annotated envelopes, on the performance of his works: concerto for orchestra, La Chanson de Roland, 2nd string quartet, 7 duos for harp and violin, etc. - Iconography: 4 beautiful photographic portraits of Henri Martelli, 3 of which are signed by the photographer Richard de Grab (1927-2001) + 9 photographs of Martelli with other composers and musicians (in particular during the festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music.
