Michal Josef GUSIKOV (1806-1837), Russian klezmer musician, he gave the first concert of klezmer [Ashkenazi Jewish] music to a Western European audience with his strawwood instrument. Signed piece. 1 p. in-8 oblong. Bad-Ems (Germany), August 2, 1836. In German. Extremely rare signature. In 1831, Gusikov invented an instrument he called the Shtroyfidl and developed an extraordinary virtuosity; he gave his first concerts in Moscow, Kiev and Odessa, then undertook, from 1835, a triumphant tour of Western Europe, hailed by many great musicians of the time, during which he died of exhaustion.
