The initial project conceived by the architect Joseph Laurent was to be framed by four monumental trophies on the pedestal commissioned from the famous Lyon sculptor Joseph Chinard. The latter had great difficulty in fulfilling this order due to technical, financial and political problems. For a long time, art historians assumed that only the main relief representing the Death of General Desaix had been finalized (now kept in the Roger Quilliot Art Museum, Clermont-Ferrand, inv. 52.5.13). Recent research and the reappearance of our impressive trophy, previously kept in private hands, brings to light this important commission for the city of Clermont-Ferrand, the capital of the region of birth of this great general of the revolutionary and consular wars. The work completes the lesser-known and very rare category of monumental works created by Joseph Chinard, who was particularly renowned for his small allegorical subjects in terracotta and for his portraits. As soon as the heroic death of General Desaix at the battle of Marengo was announced, Bonaparte decided or authorized the erection of numerous commemorative monuments in honor of his faithful comrade in arms and hero of the Egyptian campaign. Among the most famous and important of these monuments, we can mention the Tomb of the Great St. Bernard designed by Guillaume Moitte, those of the Place Dauphine and the Place des Victoires in Paris entrusted respectively to Charles Percier accompanied by Augustin Félix Fortin and to Claude Dejoux, and finally, the monument that we are dealing with, the Fountain of Desaix, also known as the Pyramid in Clermont-Ferrand, created by the architect Joseph Laurent.
