Roch-Ambroise Cucurron Sicard called L'ABBÉ SICARD (1742-182 - Lot 309
Roch-Ambroise Cucurron Sicard called L'ABBÉ SICARD (1742-1822), ecclesiastic and philanthropist, director of the Institute for the Deaf and Dumb, member of the French Academy. 3 L.A.S. to Champion de Cicé, 11 pp. in-4. Paris, October-December 1801. Two of the letters are written jointly with the abbot Beylot, priest of Beguey (Gironde). One with address and postmarks on the back. Beautiful correspondence after the signature of the Concordat. He sent him "the Brief of the pope to the constitutional bishops [] to invite them to the benefit of the reconciliation". He put at his disposal an apartment in the Institution of the deaf and dumb, in St. Magloire. "We do not yet know the Concordat []. We fear only that the legitimate bishops who have resigned will not be returned to their seats; but elsewhere it is said that M. de Juigné will be appointed to the archbishopric of Lyon and the archbishop of Aix to that of Paris. We hope that no constitutional bishop will be appointed. He gives news of their common friends, evokes the situation of the ecclesiastics, and the events of the time. "If the plan to return no prelate to his former see is followed in the Elections, we hope that you will be appointed to Rouen []. You know that it is M. Portalis who is minister of the leaf; but you do not know that he is one of my best friends; you will easily hear what I mean. It was believed in Bordeaux that the resignation of a bishop caused the exercise of the powers of his vicars to cease. We wrote to the Abbé de la Porte to reassure him that his powers would only cease when the archbishop of Bordeaux was appointed, either by you or by someone else. The cardinal legate was presented to the 1st Consul. But this presentation did not have any solemnity []. We imagine that the delay in the publication of the Concordat and the Bull which accompanies it is the effect of the slowness with which the bishops are sending their resignations, because it was thought that it was necessary to obtain them before making this Concordat known []. We have learned that at the time you wrote to us, only four had given their resignation. We are very worried about this []".
