CHARENTE-MARITIME. Marie II Madeleine de Beaudéon de PARABÈR - Lot 287
CHARENTE-MARITIME. Marie II Madeleine de Beaudéon de PARABÈRE, last abbess of the Abbaye aux Dames (from 1754 to 1792). L.A.S. to Champion de Cicé, 3 pp. in-4. [Saintes], July 8, 1791. Small trimmings in the margin. Superb letter after the visit of the new constitutional bishop of Saintes [Isaac Etienne Robinet]. "The intruder came to see me accompanied by his vicars, I received him with politeness but by declaring to him that my conscience and my principles did not allow me to recognize him as bishop of Saintes, this declaration made the remainder of the visit went well and I have not seen him since, but I have repeated on all occasions that I know only M. de La Rochefoucauld for bishop and you my lord for our superior. The vicars of the intruder came to say a mass in each community, I complied with their request to refuse them ornaments and I was forced to give them some []. This refusal made our churches close, we have three masses every day, the priests are at my choice. So we are at peace in this respect. Mr. Racapé has taken the oath and has remained the only priest of St. Pallais; we have no more relations with him but he does not worry us in any way []. Mrs. de Prupt and Marchal are afraid of the lantern, are well hidden and are convinced that their lives would be exposed if they came to confess here. Mrs. de Luchet and some others do not let themselves be so frightened and come to our aid []. We live in peace and union but in tears and bitterness about the present and in fears about the future. The intruder is said to be quite peaceful, but it is not the same for his vicars who are his masters, especially the apostate monks who are numerous here []".
