Giovanni Battista CAPRARA (1730-1810), Italian cardinal, sig - Lot 285
Giovanni Battista CAPRARA (1730-1810), Italian cardinal, signatory of the Concordat, buried in the Pantheon of Paris. 5 letters signed to Champion de Cicé, 7 pp. in-4 and in-folio. Paris, October - December 1801. Interesting correspondence at the time of the signature of the Concordat. "If it is glorious for the Religion to see the Ministers disposed to all sacrifices as soon as it is a question of its interests, it was very painful for His Holiness to propose them to you. It will, however, be a source of consolation for her to see with what zeal and disinterestedness you and the majority of your confreres are trying to contribute to the re-establishment of religion in France and to the extinction of a disastrous schism which has been tearing it apart for so long. As for jurisdiction, it is His Holiness's wish that you exercise it until new bishops are instituted, and he will only accept resignations by advocating them. Therefore, Monsignor, even if it is more than likely that your resignation will be accepted, you will want to continue to administer your diocese with the same zeal as you have done up to now. "The publication of the Bull which contains the concordat between the Holy See and France, I do not know when it will appear. It is then that everyone will see that His Holiness only wanted the re-establishment of religion and the cessation of all religious questions in France [] ". "I received and read with pleasure the Pastoral letter you wrote to your flock. I recognized in it the voice of a true Pastor who always wants to remain in intimate union with the Holy See. In it you refute with an energy worthy of your zeal the objections of those who, I hope, are only delaying the wise views which the Holy Father proposes []". A copy of Cardinal Caprara's letter to the vicars general of Paris is attached (December 10, 1801).
