Jean-Richard BLOCH (1884-1947). - Lot 182
Jean-Richard BLOCH (1884-1947). 2 L.A.S. to "dear sir and friend" [Julien Luchaire (1876-1962), founder of the French Institute in Florence]. Florence, May 29, 1914 (2 pp. in-4) and [at the front], August 22, 1914 (2 pp. in-8). From Florence, he has just learned that one of the David-Weill scholarships has been awarded to him. "No need to tell you that I am satisfied. Is it appropriate to thank the donor directly? He asks for his address, gives news of the Institute and its students. From the front, three weeks after the outbreak of hostilities. "In asking you for news, I can hardly give you any other than this: I am alive, and my faith, in this day and age, this is no small privilege. If, thirty-six hours ago, someone had told me that I would be writing this note to you in the shade of a beautiful hop field, in complete physical and moral tranquility, I would have taken it as an inappropriate mockery of the German bullets and shells that were raining down on our 325°. We are far from having all returned. Those who did come back are enjoying life twice over []. [Enlisted in the 325th infantry regiment, he was wounded 3 times]. Attached is a photograph of Bloch in military dress, dated (October 1916) and signed on the back. Postcard size.
