CHARLES V (1643-1690), titular duke of Lorraine... - Lot 172 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
CHARLES V (1643-1690), titular duke of Lorraine and Bar (175), "the duke without a duchy". Signed letter with autograph subscription and postscript (5 lines), to the Elector of Trier. 1 p. folio. "Insprugle" [Innsbruck], April 11, 1690. small tear on one side affecting a few words. Important letter to the Elector of Trier, written 7 days before his death, during the war of the League of Augsburg. " V. E. does me a lot of favors by continuing the news that she has of the enemies who according to all appearance will not undertake anything, as one had apprehended it. I believe even that from now on the armies of the Emperor and the Empire will be in a position to not only prevent them but also to attack them. It is not that until now I have not yet had any certainty either of the Army that I will command or of the place where His Majesty will want me to act, as I have not yet been made aware of anything positive, even though it seems that I am destined for the lower Rhine []. He adds in his own handwriting: "His Imperial Majesty orders me to go to her as soon as possible to receive her orders before the camp. I wanted to inform your Electoral Highness so that if there is something of her service and that I can contribute to it, she will make sure to let me know her desires making me a very great pleasure to testify to V.A. Electoralle my sincere friendship".
