RHONE. Manuscript of 4 pp. in-folio, "Report of the departur - Lot 136
RHONE. Manuscript of 4 pp. in-folio, "Report of the departure of the ice in Lyon". Scratchings and corrections. January 1789. Very interesting report on the devastating climatic events of January 14 and 15, 1789, the ice having carried away a part of the bridges of the city, and caused the overflowing of the Rhone, sinking whole factories. "On Wednesday, January 14, 1789, between two and three hours after noon, following a small flood of water that we thought should be attributed to the melting of the snow and the rain, a few leagues above Lyon only, the ice rose almost at the same time with a bang []. This first break-up caused various ravages upstream of the Pont St Clair, from the confines of the Bresse territory with those of the Lyonnais. A factory serving a button factory was started and thrown into the river []. Two other mills were sunk low in the same place where they were moored along the St Clair road []. Thursday morning 15th. The flood of the Rhône has considerably increased, and has caused the overflow; it has carried a lot of ice at various intervals, which confirms in the conjecture that the rupture did not take place at the same time on all its extent from Seyssel, and that it is very close to Lyon that the break-up started []. At 7 o'clock in the morning, one of the two plants of the S. Cortet downstream of the Pont St Clair sank low due to the impact of the ice which had passed the bridge without breaking; this factory was however in a sort of bay [] ".
