"I left Paris on the 15th [August] at 11 o'clock in the evening, and I arrived in Verdun on the 16th at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. When I got off at the station, I found the Emperor there, who had arrived a few minutes before. S.M. told me to wait in Verdun for the evil Bazaine who would arrive the day after tomorrow [] " (Verdun, August 20, 1870). - Telegraphic dispatch from Montmédy: "Railway and telegraph wires cut at Joppécourt by Prussians.
