HAUTE-LOIRE. Jean-Pierre CHAZAL (1766-1840),... - Lot 119 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
HAUTE-LOIRE. Jean-Pierre CHAZAL (1766-1840), conventional sent to Haute-Loire. Letter signed with 8 autograph lines "to his fellow deputies of the Haute-Loire". 3 pp. large folio, headed by the delegate of the Convention in Puy-de-Dôme, Haute-Loire, Cantal and vignette "Liberté Egalité Justice Humanité". Le Puy, 23 vendémiaire year 4 [15 Oct. 1795]. Important letter on the tracking down of royalist "fanatic rebels" in the Haute-Loire. He had asked for 350 volunteers but the commander of Lozère vetoed his request. "However, in view of the urgency, he agreed to grant 120 men who arrived yesterday, the 22nd, at one o'clock in the afternoon []. Adjutant General Delobelle is nothing like him: he has put the greatest zeal and diligence into helping us. He entered Monistrol on the 20th and left 200 men there; on the 21st he went to Yssengeaux, where he left as many men, and on the 22nd he arrived at Le Pertuis at 10 a.m. with the rest of his forces. The rebels were no longer there, they had dissipated the day before and their leader had fled. Our junction took place at one o'clock in the afternoon. You will find in this envelope a decree which I had taken on leaving Le Puy and which I had read at the head of the corps which I was leading. I enclose two others taken at Pertuis and a 4th signed here on my return against the fugitive leader of the fanatical rebels, it is a great misfortune that he escapes us. General Delobelle having accompanied me to Le Puy, we agreed to place a last post of 60 men at Landerolles to support that of Le Pertuis and to ensure communications [] ". He proposes to advance to Monastier and to continue the disarmament against the rebellious communes; he has taken a decree in this sense which will remain secret. He also summoned all of the leaders of Fay and Les Estables "who are reported to me as having taken the most active part in the revolt. He had Maurin d'Yssengeaux arrested. "This man had his brother-in-law in the rebel camp. Their leader lodged at his house in Yssengeaux; he slept there every night; he is convinced of having given 100 livres to an express to carry the letters of convocation of Lamotte against Le Puy and of having threatened this express to have his head cut off []. Announce to the National Convention that the Haute Loire has no more Royalists gathered and that it is it which dispersed these brigands by putting down their brothers from Paris []. I have the greatest praise to make of the municipality of Monistrol and that of St Didier []. The municipality of Yssingeaux has executed the decree concerning Chabert, my commissioner, whom they received as a prisoner of the rebels and whom they have held since their escape. They brought him back to Puy in a sling and bareheaded".
