HAUTE-VIENNE. Baron Gabriel d'AIGUEPERSE... - Lot 64 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
HAUTE-VIENNE. Baron Gabriel d'AIGUEPERSE (Château d'Aigueperse, Saint-Paul d'Eyjeaux 1797-1884). L.A.S. to Alexis de Gourgues. 4 pp. in-8, accompanied by 2 sketches on separate sheets. Saint-Paul d'Eyjeaux, October 28, 1859. Interesting letter on the menhirs of Métayer, illustrated with 2 sketches. He first evokes discoveries of prehistoric objects, among which a bronze one, made in fields while plowing, which he proposes to send to him. Then he comes to the dolmens. "What is of a less easy transmission, it is a menhir, of six meters of height; it is in one of my meadows where it receives from time to time some visits; to less than one hundred meters of him lie some rather strange voluminous stones, one has the air of an engraved boat, the other seems to have been sawn in two although of a very hard grain; to eight kil. from my house is a very pretty dolmen of a perfect conservation; finally at a greater distance at one of my cousins, there is a rock known in the country under the name of the Stone of the Savages, it is in slope like the roof of a building, on the slope are dug impressions of human forms of various sizes with scrapers. We explained this to ourselves by thinking that it was a stone on which human sacrifices were made: at some distances on various points are superimposed rocks that we also believe date back to the Druidic period. In my municipality there is also a tumulus that has never been excavated [] ". He illustrates his remarks with, on a separate sheet, the sketches of the different menhirs. [The 2 menhirs of Le Métayer have been registered as historical monuments since 1984.]
