LOZÈRE. Émile de MORÉ, geologist and prehistorian, he led ex - Lot 61
LOZÈRE. Émile de MORÉ, geologist and prehistorian, he led excavations in Lozère, in particular in Javols. L.A.S. to Alexis de Gourgues. 4 pp. in-8. Valognes, January 19, 1866. Interesting letter on the dolmen of Chamgefège illustrated with 2 sketches of prehistoric objects. "I will content myself with telling you what I have observed in our country. One does not find flints very often in our Lozere lands and especially carved ones. There is in the commune of Balsiège a village named Changefège [Chamgefège] a few kilometers from Mende. On a plateau called the causse de Changefège several well preserved dolmens have been discovered. I excavated several of them in which I found human bones, of men, women and children. They contained fragments of very coarse pottery, and flint axes of which here is more or less the shape [he illustrates his point with 2 ink drawings] []. I know the Auvergne and I can tell you that one finds in Gergovia and in Coran, a great quantity of axes, arrows, etc. but it is not the same in Lozere, these objects are much rarer. I know Mr. Bouillet. The arrows of Changefège are of small dimensions and roughly carved. I do not know of any cave with animal bones [] ". [The dolmen of Chamgefège was classified as a historical monument in 1889.] Attached is a manuscript: "Mémoire sur les antiquités du Larzac" by Baron de Gaujal, a period copy in an unidentified hand, 17 pp. in-4.
