LOT-ET-GARONNE. Ludomir COMBES (Fumel 1824-1892), geologist, paleontologist and prehistorian, pioneer of prehistoric and paleontological research in Lot-et-Garonne. L.A.S. to Alexis de Gourgues. 2 pp. in-4. Fumel, August 6, 1866. Interesting letter on the antiquity of man in the Lot valley. "While sharing your way of seeing on the degree of antiquity that you attribute to the finds made at the Eyzies and on what you say relative to the ice age which would have been contemporary to them, I would not know, however, to continue to share your ideas, if you thought to extend your same way of seeing of the Eyzies and with a degree of antiquity absolutely similar to our first apparitions and dwellings by the man of the edges of the Lot. For me, the man who in the valley of the Vézère may well have seen only the glacial period, must have witnessed before the glacial period, in the valleys of the Lot, the second European Flood, result of the uplift of the Alps formation which covered in part our valleys and our plains with strong layers of rolled pebbles and sandy-clay silt, often even ferruginous and calcareous. And I consider as very probable, the presence of man in our valleys of the Lot, during the first deposits of the quaternary period ". He sends him back to read his brochure and invites him to come and see the "geological, paleontological and archeological proofs which establish in a very probable way a greater antiquity of man in the valleys of the Lot than in that of the Vézère". He informed him that the Queen of Spain had just decorated him for his work on the quaternary.
