DORDOGNE. Letter addressed to Alexis de Gourgues. 2 pp. in-4 - Lot 44
DORDOGNE. Letter addressed to Alexis de Gourgues. 2 pp. in-4. Address on the back. [Issigeac], Sept. 2, 1847. Interesting letter about "the Roucha stone" and the discovery of a burial site. "The small flint stones that you saw in Faux are the only ones that have been preserved: the peasant who found them threw them all away except this one []. The stone under which the skeletons were found was entirely rough, laid horizontally and supported by seven or eight other stones of lesser size, placed vertically. No whole skeletons were found, but only a heap of human bones confusedly placed and mixed with earth: no weapons, clasps or other debris. One found two small earthenware pots rather similar to salt shakers of peasant [] ". In the vicinity, he also found other human bones under a pile of stones. "The place where this stone was was called lou Roucha de la lojo. This name was given to it because a vineyard had been built next to this stone. When I searched, no one in the country knew that there was a raised stone in this place. It was hidden under heaps of stones []".
