DORDOGNE. Alexis de GOURGUES. Autograph letter (minute with - Lot 42
DORDOGNE. Alexis de GOURGUES. Autograph letter (minute with numerous corrections), addressed to "monsieur le secrétaire général". 3 pp. ½ in-folio. Lanquais, March 30, 1859. Very interesting letter on the prehistoric discoveries made at Singleyrac. "[] From the discovery of Singleyrac, there will remain at least a new proof of a fact several times noted : the fact of the simultaneous presence in the same Celtic burial, of objects made of gold, and of bronze (the fragment of coarse pottery which is joined to it would indicate that these objects were enclosed in a vase, like the bronze axes discovered in Pauillac) [], which sufficiently establishes that these industries so different at first sight (gold, tin, copper, flint of aspe porphyry cut or polished, etc.), belong to the same period of civilization []. These axes are 3 in number. 2 large ones exactly the same, the 3rd is much smaller. The two large ones are remarkable for the width of the end opposite the cutting edge, it is no longer a point, it is a section [] ".
