Gaspard Adolphe CHATIN (1813-1901), mycologist,... - Lot 5 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Gaspard Adolphe CHATIN (1813-1901), mycologist, pharmacologist and botanist. He taught botany at the École supérieure de pharmacie, a school which he directed from 1874. L.A.S. to Cordier. Paris, June 3, 1871. 4 pp. in-8. Chatin asks his correspondent, Cordier, then at Maison-Carrée [El-Harrach, in Algeria], to bring him specimens of African flora: "Cytinus, which grows on the resin of the Citée; Gynomosium, which is nourished above all by the subterranean parts of some herbaceous plants of brackish waters, not rare, it is said, in the interior of the land in Algeria; finally Loranthus europæus, which comes on the oaks. Ask about African truffles. If you pick me a few duplicates they will hold a good place in my herbarium [] ". Chatin also evokes the Commune: "You guessed right in foreseeing the civil war, and at the end of it, that is, by the ultra republicans of the Republic. Our Essarts suffered little from the Prussians, but on the other hand, our house on the rue de Rennes had its crossing ploughed by the bullets of the army coming from the Montparnasse station and by those of the Commune, whose defenders were defending a strong barricade cutting the street at the Carrefour de Vaugirard-Regard-Placide [] ". Chatin was delighted that his son was safe and sound, after the fighting he had done at the fort of Issy, at the head of a mobile battalion. "The Botanical Society, disturbed by the events, has not yet renewed its office. The always meager sessions, and sometimes interrupted, will not lead to great expenses for the Bulletin. I believe with you that it would make a successful excursion to Africa, and this is something we can think about when we are back on our feet a bit. In the meantime, initiate yourself to the Flora of Africa [] ".
