Arcisse de CAUMONT (1801-1873), geologist and archaeologist. - Lot 4
Arcisse de CAUMONT (1801-1873), geologist and archaeologist. L.A.S. to the mining engineer Abdon-Jacques-Frambourg Garnier (1785-1865). 3 pp. in-4. Header with vignette of the Société Linnéenne du Calvados. Address on the back. Caen, November 10, 1824. Beautiful letter on Garnier's work Mémoires géologiques sur les terrains du Bas-Boulonnais, and particularly on the limestones or granites that it contains. "I read with great pleasure your interesting memoir on the terrains of the Bas Boulonnais. I have seen in it with great interest the description of the marbles and the indication of the magnesiferous limestone of the English; it is precisely this last limestone which engages me to claim today your complaisance [] ". He wishes that he sends him some samples of his magnesiferous limestone "with a note on its deposit compared to that of the marble and other surrounding grounds", as well as pieces of marble and German red sandstone. "I am occupied with a work on the lower secondary terrains in general, and you would do me a real service by sending me [] a small collection of the rocks of your department which relate to these terrains". In exchange, he offered him about fifty rocks from Calvados, "as well as fossils of the oolitic limestone". He offered him to be a member of the Société Linnéenne du Calvados and presented him with his last publication on the terrains of Calvados, decorated with 10 plates.
