Salvador Dali (1904-1989). Rhinocerontic... - Lot 398 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Salvador Dali (1904-1989). Rhinocerontic bust of the Lacemaker of Vermeer, 1955. Bronze with brown patina. Signed on the foot. Bears the stamp of the Valsuani lost-wax foundry at the bottom. Numbered EA IV/IV. H : 49,7 cm. Posthumous casting, accompanied by the certificate of authenticity of the Airaindor-Valsuani Foundry dated 25 May 1990, on a contract signed with the Demart company (Société de gestion des droits d'auteur de Salvador Dali) then under the direction of Robert Descharnes. Indexed under the n° 137 in the book Dali- Le dur et le mou- Sculptures et objets par Robert et Nicolas Descharnes. Bronze made after a first work in clay by Dali dated 1954. Scratches on the patina. Provenance: acquired directly from the founder by the current owner. According to oral tradition, there would have been only one cast copy. The Rhinocerontic Bust of The Lacemaker of Vermeer sprang in the surrealist spirit of Dali by a fusion of visions mixing horn of rhinoceros observed in the zoo of Vincennes, corpuscular and logarithmic granulation of the cauliflower, morphology of the sunflower and the painting "The Lacemaker" of Vermeer preserved in the Louvre of which, Dali, haunted by the masterpiece, made a copy. These different sources of inspiration make it an example of the Dalinian thought rarely as well put in shape as in this sculpture. Made from a clay model in 1954, this work holds a special place in Salvador Dali's artistic production.
