Jacques Philippe Martin Cels (1740-1806),... - Lot 16 - Conan Belleville Hôtel d'Ainay
Jacques Philippe Martin Cels (1740-1806), botanist and horticulturist. Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu (1748-1836), botanist. Signed autograph piece (written by Cels and co-signed by the two). Paris], 21 floréal year 4 [May 10, 1796]. 1 p. ½ in-4. After the suppression of the Academy of Sciences and the sealing of the material. "Report of the commissioners of the Funds Commission, at the request of citizens Fatori and Richard, which was returned to them by the class". They set out the request: "Les cit. Fatori and Richard, the 1st guard of the machinery cabinet of the former Academy of Sciences, the last one in charge of their maintenance; ask the class of mathematical and physical sciences for the return of the pieces that belong to them in this cabinet []"; they also ask to be paid for the maintenance of the machines, pointing out that since the seals were affixed in 1793, they must have deteriorated considerably. Cels and Jussieu give their opinion on these requests and conclude: "Finally, on the observations of these quotations, which tend to represent the need to repair the machines of the aforementioned Academy of Sciences, the commissioners, no doubt convinced of the importance of conserving this precious deposit, believe that they must nevertheless refrain from proposing partial measures in this regard to the class. The work to be done for the libraries and collections of the Institute must be complete beforehand, and this can only be done by the rules of procedure which a commission is now dealing with".
